Local TD welcomes change as 830 families in Offaly to receive weekly fuel allowance payment

The first payment will issue on Thursday, March 12th and will be backdated to January 1st.

Fianna Fáil TD for Offaly, Tony McCormack, has welcomed the extension of the weekly fuel allowance payment to those in receipt of the working family payment.

Deputy McCormack said that 830 families in Offaly are set to benefit from the change, with 50,000 families expected to benefit nationwide.

Fuel Allowance is a weekly payment of €38 that helps with the cost of heating homes during the winter months and is paid to one person per household.

The first payment will be issued issue on Thursday, March 12 and will be backdated to January 1. This means that a back payment of €380 will be available for those who received the working family payment before January 1.

Speaking on the announcement, Deputy McCormack said: "I have had a lot of constituents contacting me about this issue and asking for this change to be made, so I am happy for those families that we have been able to get it over the line."

He added: "This will make a real difference for 830 hardworking families across Offaly, helping them with the cost of heating their homes and easing some of the pressure on household bills."

Tony McCormack TD concluded: "The backdated payment will also provide an immediate boost for families and will ensure that those who need support most receive consistent help with their energy costs."
