As Mother’s Day approaches, our hearts turn naturally to the women who have shaped our lives, the mothers who bore us, nurtured us, guided us, and loved us with a devotion that is often silent, unseen, and yet immeasurable. It is a love that cannot be bought or replicated, a love that mirrors the heart of God Himself. For many of us, our mother was our first home. Before we spoke our first word, she listened to our cry. Before we took our first step, she steadied us with her hands. Before we understood the world, she helped us feel safe in it.
A mother’s love is often quiet, often unseen, and sometimes even unnoticed, but it is one of the most powerful forces on earth. It is a love that gives and gives again, often without recognition. It is a love that reflects something sacred, something divine. Scripture reminds us of this truth, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 49:15). God Himself compares His love to the love of a mother. That alone tells us something profound, the heart of a mother reflects the heart of God. The modern celebration of Mother’s Day has its roots in Mothering Sunday, an early Christian tradition in the UK and Europe.
On a certain Sunday of Lent, families would return to their “mother church” for a special service, a sacred homecoming. Over time, this evolved into the Mother’s Day we know today, celebrated with flowers, gifts, and expressions of affection. Yet, Mother’s Day is never just about presents, it is about presence, recognition, and gratitude for the sacred, selfless work of mothers. Motherhood is inherently ambiguous. For some, the day brings joy; for others, it brings grief or longing. This ambiguity reminds us that motherhood is not only about biology, it is about relationship, sacrifice, influence, and love, in all its complexity. God understands this fully, for He Himself knows the intensity, the joy, and the heartbreak of motherhood. He gave us mothers who reflect His love and gave us Mary, the mother of Jesus, who embodies perfect faith, obedience, and compassion.
The sacrifice of a mother’s love
Consider the true story of a mother caught in the Japan earthquake. Rescuers discovered her body kneeling protectively over her three-month-old son, her own life given to shield him. Wrapped in a blanket, a cell phone lay nearby, bearing her final message: "If you survive, remember that I love you." This is the essence of motherhood: sacrificial, steadfast, and boundless love. Mothers give everything without hesitation, without expectation, and even in death, their love endures. God’s love for us is reflected in this selfless devotion.
As Isaiah reminds us: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 49:15 NIV). A mother’s heart is a small echo of divine love, a love that bears, forgives, encourages, and strengthens, often unnoticed. Someone once said: “Mothers are like buttons. They hold everything together.” It is a simple sentence, but anyone who has lived in a family knows how true it is. When a child is sick, who sits beside the bed through the night? When the family is struggling, who quietly carries the worry? When someone needs encouragement, who speaks hope into their heart? Often it is a mother. Many mothers carry invisible burdens that no one else sees. They pray for their children long after those children stop asking for prayers. They worry quietly. They hope deeply. They forgive quickly. A wise mother teaches with patience. She does not simply say, “You are wrong.” Instead she gently guides, showing a better way. She understands something important: correction without love wounds the heart, but correction with love builds it. The influence of a mother is immeasurable. Henry Ward Beecher once said: “The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom.” Much of what we become in life begins there.

The many faces of motherhood
Motherhood wears many faces. Some mothers are biological, some stepmothers, adoptive, foster, or spiritual mothers. Some mothers are gone, some distant, some struggling. Some face heartbreaks, loss, or disappointment.
Others are in the trenches of sleepless nights, diapers, and endless chores. Some are waiting, longing, or walking the hard path of infertility. To each of these mothers, your love is seen. Your sacrifices are remembered. Your courage, your endurance, and your prayers make a difference in ways you may never know. Mother’s Day is about honoring this continuum of love and labor. Whatever your experience of motherhood, your presence matters. Your prayers matter. Your love matters. The World Needs a Mother’s Heart. In a world that often values power, competition, and success above all else, the qualities of motherhood are sometimes overlooked. Yet the world desperately needs them. Tenderness.
Compassion. Patience. Forgiveness. A society without a mother’s heart becomes cold. But when maternal love is present, in families, communities, and churches, something beautiful happens. People feel seen. People feel valued. People feel loved. Motherhood reminds us that the most important things in life cannot be bought. Love. Kindness. Presence.
Mary, our spiritual mother
And then there is Mary, the mother of Jesus, whose life transcends every ideal we might hold. From the first moment of her fiat, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word" she modeled humility, trust, patience, obedience, and mercy. Mary’s maternal gaze still speaks to us today. She embraces our sorrows, rejoices in our triumphs, and draws us closer to her Son. Jesus Himself, on the cross, entrusted us to her care: “…Behold thy mother!” (John 19:27 KJV). In Mary, we see the reflection of what every mother’s heart strives for, a love that nurtures, protects, guides, and intercedes.
For those who cannot hold their earthly mother, or whose mother has passed, Mary becomes our refuge, our comfort, and our guide. Mary becomes not only the mother of Jesus, but a mother to every believer. A mother who listens. A mother who prays. A mother who leads us closer to her Son. Her life teaches us humility, trust, patience, obedience, mercy, and love.
Practical ways to honour mothers
Mother’s Day is not only about flowers and gifts. It is about presence, attention, and love expressed in meaningful ways: Spend time: Call, visit, or share a meal. Listen deeply. Show gratitude. Write a note, pray together, or simply say “I love you” with sincerity. Acts of service: Help with chores, care for her needs, or support her in ways that relieve her burdens. Pray: Lift her in prayer for health, strength, peace, and joy, trusting God to bless the mother who has blessed your life.

Thought for the week
As your thought for the week and for Mother's Day remember that the love of a mother is sacred. It reflects God’s heart. It is a refuge, a guide, and a force that can shape lives for generations. Speak love. Show love. Pray love. And let no mother feel invisible, unappreciated, or unloved. For in the end, as Mary shows us, every mother’s heart is a window to heaven, a testament to the enduring power of selfless, sacrificial, divine love.Who in your life carries a mother’s heart? How will you intentionally honour them this week—not with words alone, but with presence, patience, and acts of love that truly matter? Take time to tell your mother, stepmother, grandmother, foster mother, or spiritual mother that her life has made a difference.
Let the words, the touch, and the prayer reach her heart while you still can. Let me leave you with one of my prayers for Mothers - "Father-Mother God, Creator and Nourisher, We thank You for the gift of our mothers—those who gave us life, those who nurtured us, those who prayed and sacrificed on our behalf. For mothers who are weary, give rest. For mothers who grieve, give comfort. For mothers who feel unseen, let them know they are cherished. For mothers who have passed, let their memory be a blessing. Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, Mary, draw us closer to Jesus. Teach us to love with courage, to nurture with patience, and to give without expectation. Help us honour the mothers You have placed in our lives, and guide us to walk in their footsteps of faith, love, and compassion. We ask this in the name of Jesus, her Son and our Saviour. Amen."
