Tributes paid after death of popular Offaly woman and All-Ireland winner

Tributes are being paid this week after the death of an All-Ireland-winning Offaly footballer and very popular Edenderry woman Carmel McGuinness (nee Carroll).

Carmel passed away peacefully at Sancta Maria Nursing Home following a long illness and is predeceased by her father C. Carroll and her mother Sadie.

Her RIP.ie notice reads: "She will be deeply regretted and sadly missed by her loving family: husband Seamus, son Keith and his partner Laura, brothers Gerry, Pauric and Declan, sister Helen, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunt, uncle, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends."

Edenderry GAA were one of the first to pay tribute to the former player and All-Ireland winner: "The Club would like to extend our sincere condolences to both the McGuinness and Carroll families on the passing of Carmel McGuinness (nee Carroll) at the weekend especially her husband Seamus, son Keith and her brothers Gerry, Pauric, Declan and her sister Helen and all her extended family.

"Both families have a long association with Edenderry and Offaly GAA and Carmel, Helen and Gerry all won All Ireland Football medals in a four-year span from 1979 to 1982 with Offaly and her son Keith is a former chairman and current player with the club.

"Carmel was a great supporter of both club and county when her own playing career was over, whether at games or fundraising activities. Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam dilis."

Other friends and neighbours have been paying tribute. One person wrote: "So sorry to hear of the passing of my former neighbour and friend Carmel. Taken from this world too soon. Condolences to her family and friends. Fly high with the angels lovely lady."

Another said: "Sincere sympathy to Seamus, Keith, Laura, Helen, Gerry, Pauric, Declan and the McGuinness and Carroll families on the sad passing of Carmel. Great memories of our childhood days playing rounders at the corner of Gilroy Ave. and going to school together. A great friend and neighbour in Francis St. May your gentle soul rest in heavenly peace Carmel."

Funeral Arrangements:

Carmel will repose at Larkin's Funeral Home, Edenderry this Tuesday from 5pm to 7pm with Rosary at 7pm. Her Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday at 2.30pm in St. Mary's Church, Edenderry, followed by burial in St. Mary's cemetery.
