Tributes have been flooding in after the untimely death of an Offaly GAA club legend this week.

John 'Bruce' Hannon passed away at Tallaght Hospital on Monday with his beloved local GAA club St Brigid's in Croghan, Co Offaly, paying an emotional tribute to him on Wednesday.

They said: "When news filtered through of the untimely death of John "Bruce" Hannon, it sent shivers down the spines of members and friends of St. Brigid's GAA club and the entire community of Croghan.

"Bruce, as John was affectionately known, was a brilliant clubman who devoted a lifetime of hard work and dedication to our proud little club.

"A fearless defender, Bruce made the famous No. 2 blue and white jersey his own for over ten years, winning Offaly Intermediate Football Championships in 1984 and 1990, when his no-nonsense defending was a joy to watch.

"When his playing career ended, Bruce seamlessly moved to the administrative side of club affairs, serving as treasurer for many years until ill health forced him to step aside in 2010. With improving health, he returned to take an active part in our club and held the post of vice-chairman at the time of his death," the club added.

"He did the little jobs around the club grounds that often go unnoticed but are essential, leaving a void that will never be filled.
Bruce lived his short life to the fullest, always ready for a session and the craic. A lover of music, he was the first man on the dance floor when the music started.

"A gifted carpenter and kitchen maker, his craftsmanship can be seen in many houses in the area. He was also a caretaker at our local school, Scoil Bhríde, and had a great rapport with the staff, children, and parents. Many red eyes were evident at the school in recent days.

"Bruce loved his community and was always willing to help his neighbours when called upon. He will be deeply and sadly missed by his wife Mary, daughter Tierna, son Shay, adored grandson Brogan, son-in-law Rob, daughter-in-law Sarah, and siblings Michael, Maura, Seamus, Peadar, Bríd, Aidan, Ann, and Martin, as well as extended family, relatives, and friends. To them, we extend our sincere sympathy.

"May the angels in heaven welcome you, and may your gentle soul Rest In Peace. A true blue St. Brigid's legend. Thanks Bruce, for years of wonderful memories. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."

Funeral Arrangements:

John's Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday at 12 noon in St. Brigid's Church, Croghan followed by burial in Croghan Cemetery.
