A CALL has gone out to the general public of Birr and the wider region to bring along your vintage vehicle in support of a Bishop's charity visit to Birr.
Bishop Michael Burrows is once again bringing his fundraising charity tour, which he calls his “peregrinations”, around the Diocese of Tuam, Limerick and Killaloe and will be in Birr this Friday March 6th.
People are invited to bring their vintage vehicles (of any sort, whether car, tractor or bike) to Oxmantown Mall at 1 o'clock on Friday the 6th where the Bishop will view the vehicles and chat with the owners. Then everybody will proceed into St Brendan's Church for hymn singing at 1.30.
Rev Arthur Minion is asking those with any questions to please contact him on his mobile 086 8251065. “All are welcome to this special event,” he told The Midland Tribune, “whether you have a vehicle or not. As well as cars and tractors, lawnmowers and small machines will also be welcome.”
In 2023 the Bishop “peregrinated” around the Diocese over a number of days, during which he met many people who gave generously for a number of good causes. “It was a slightly eccentric form of sponsored activity on my part,” said the Bishop, “but it was very fruitful in financial, sociable and indeed spiritual terms. And it seemed to bind the Diocese harmoniously together in a common task. Now in Lent 2026 I am doing something similar again.”
The funds raised will be divided evenly into three parts. One third will go to Embrace FARM, the charity that works to support farm families in Ireland where there is crisis, sudden death, life-changing accident or suicide. Another third will go towards agencies working to assist the suffering people in Gaza. The final third will go towards the Bishops' Appeal, the church's own trusted and effective agency in the areas of World Development and Emergency Relief.
