SIGNIFICANT safety enhancement works have been successfully completed at Mercy Primary School, delivering improved visibility, safer access, and traffic calming measures for students, parents, and staff.
The project follows the recent completion of similar safety upgrades at St. Brendan's Boys National School, reflecting an ongoing commitment to child safety in school areas across the Birr MD area.
Councillor Audrey Hennessy Kennedy told The Midland Tribune that over recent months she engaged closely with school Principal Barbara Hanamy and municipal district staff to address persistent concerns regarding vehicles parking on double yellow lines at the entrance to the school’s small yard. Illegal parking had been creating dangerous visibility issues for those entering and exiting the school grounds.
The completed works on Chapel Lane include:
Installation of pencil-style bollards to prevent illegal parking near the school gates
Introduction of three new traffic calming ramps to reduce vehicle speeds
Enhanced safety and visibility for pedestrians accessing the school
Councillor Hennessy Kennedy welcomed the completion of the project:
“I am delighted to see these important safety works delivered at Mercy Primary School. Concerns had been raised repeatedly about parking and poor visibility at the gates, and it was essential that these issues were addressed. The installation of bollards and traffic calming measures will significantly improve safety for students, parents, and staff. I would like to sincerely thank the Birr MD team for the high standard of work carried out.”
These improvements form part of a broader effort to prioritise child safety and promote safer traffic behaviour around school environments in Birr.
