House is 'fine example of early 19th Century architecture'

An historic house in Cloghan is currently undergoing extensive renovation work.

Under the Historic Structures Fund, Hill Street house Cloghan received a grant of €85,887.75 approved over a two year period, 2025 to 2026, and a number of works, including roof repairs, are being undertaken.

This structure is listed on the Offaly County Council Record of Protected Structures, which describes it as a “fine example of domestic early nineteenth-century urban architecture. The rhythmical fenestration and excellently preserved doorway make this building a welcome and visually appealing structure. The detailing of the sidelights with their geometric design adds an artistic flair to the modest structure. The proportion and form of the house, built about 1820, along with the retention of original features, creates an architecturally significant building within Cloghan and one which plays a leading role within the built heritage of the area.”

The Gate Lodge Kinnitty Castle (below) has also received a grant, which will go towards window and window head repairs. The €8,000 will go towards “Interiors, Windows, Doors and Associated Elements at the Gate Lodge.” €15,000 has also been granted towards roof repairs to Temple Connor at Clonmacnoise.
