An artist's impression of a transformed Castle Street created as part of the literature on Roscrea's Town First Plan
Roscrea Fianna Fáil County Councillor, Michael Smith, said there are no plans to fully pedestrianise Roscrea's Castle Street.
Roscrea was one of the first towns in the country and only town in North Tipperary to be selected for the new Town First development scheme and part of the plans sees a redesign of Roscrea's Castle Street.
Cllr Smith told the monthly meeting of the Municipal Council for the Roscrea area in Thurles on Monday that “disinformation” about plans to pedestrianise Castle Street had caused concerns for local people and called for the rumours to be rubbished.
“There are no plans to pedestrianise Castle Street, I'm not in favour of it and I have seen the three options and my preference is actually a one way system which will see a circular movement of cars around the town - I think that is something local people and businesses would support and give very positive feedback,” he said.

Meanwhile, the community in Roscrea are reminded of a public consultation event to explore options for the future of Castle Street.
You can have your say about what you think would be best for Castle Street at a public consultation event in Roscrea's Black Mills complex later this month.
The event at the Black Mills complex is called the 'Revitalising Castle Street – Community Consultation Event' and will take place on Thursday, 22nd January, from 4.00pm to 7.30pm.
This event is an opportunity for everyone in Roscrea to see how the proposals have developed following feedback received through the online community survey and previous stakeholder engagement in November last year.
An overview of the project will be on public display as well as a summary of the consultation feedback and the wider movement and parking strategy for the town.
Also on display will be an outline of Roscrea's tourism strategy and Masterplan option layouts for Castle Street and Church Street.
