Main Street Borrisokane
Local Councillor Michael O'Meara told a recent meeting that Borrisokane is suffering from a serious car parking problem at the moment.
He pointed out during a Nenagh Municipal District meeting that many people in the town have complained to him about the issue.
“A number of shopowners have told me that the same cars are parked outside their shops all day, which is not an acceptable situation. There should be a turnover of cars during the day, not the same ones always there. These businesses have enough problems already and don't need this. What is needed in the town is a car park, something which we have discussed a few times over the years. We need to create a car park as a matter of urgency.”
The Councillor pointed out that Borrisokane has improved greatly during the last decade; “however this parking problem is holding the town back considerably. Often it means that people can't get parking where they want to. Frequently they can't park in the Fairgreen area." (The town library and the fire station are located in the Fairgreen area).
He pointed out that following significant investment in main street improvements and stormwater projects, Borrisokane had experienced a resurgence, attracting new businesses and residents. This success led to increased vehicle numbers. The lack of sufficient parking spaces forces drivers to double-park on the main street, creating congestion and potential road safety hazards. Residents and businesses are pushing for action to secure the necessary funding and a site for a car park to support the town's growth and improve safety. Cllr O’Meara said the Council should start looking for the right site and then secure the money needed for the project. Liam Brett, Director of Services, said he will ask the District Engineer to look at the issue.
