There has been a significant increase in the number of gardaí stationed in Offaly over the past decade, new figures have revealed.

The latest statistics show that there are 163 gardaí operating in the county, as of December 2025. This represents a 28.4 per cent increase on the 2015 figure, which stood at 127.

The county's garda figures reached a record high in 2020, when the total of gardaí stood at 167. However, that figure fell by 10 the following year and hasn't recovered since.

However, the December 2025 figure is still much higher than any such total recorded between 2009 and 2017, during which the average was 137.

Of the 165 gardaí who are stationed in the county today, 131 are on general duty, 28 are sergeants and four are inspectors.

There is no superintendent in the county, but there are two responsible for the Laois/Offaly region stationed in Portlaoise.

Over half of Offaly’s gardaí are stationed in Tullamore, with 84 currently operating in the county town. Meanwhile, there are 37 assigned to Birr and 19 in Edenderry.

Clara, on the other hand, has nine gardaí stationed there whilst Ferbane and Banagher have four and five respectively.

The villages of Kinnitty, Shinrone and Rhode boast just a singular garda each, whilst there are two stationed in Kilcormac.

The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána under Section 33 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024.
