Judge will not strike out Offaly drugs supply charge

Man with no previous convictions admits Birr offence

Tullamore Courthouse

Man prosecuted at Tullamore District Court

JUDGE Andrew Cody said he will not strike out a charge of having drugs for sale or supply.

Judge Cody made the comment after solicitor Patrick Martin appeared for a 33-year-old Latvian man and offered €500 to the court poor box.

Mr Martin said his client Valerus Afromejevs, Cloncarban Lane, Birr had no previous convictions having been in Ireland for 10 years.

Mr Afromejevs pleaded guilty to having drugs for sale or supply to others at his address on November 18 last.

Sergeant Richard Thornton, court presenter, said the drugs were found during an afternoon search of the man's home and they were valued at €500.

Mr Martin said the drugs were for distribution among friends of the accused and added that Mr Afromejevs had brought €500 and had been co-operative with the gardai.

Judge Cody adjourned sentence to June 17 next for a probation and welfare report.

He also ordered the man to return to court with clear urine tests for February, March, April and May.

“He has to get those, no excuses,” said the judge.

He added that the accused could hold his €500 poor box contribution until June 17 and said that because the conviction was for sale or supply of drugs, “there won't be a strike-out”.
