Plea of guilty entered at Mullingar Circuit Court

A Midlands boxer who has represented Ireland has pleaded guilty to a serious assault charge.

Mary Nevin (24), Austin Friars Street, Mullingar, entered a guilty plea to assaulting another woman when she was arraigned at Mullingar Circuit Couirt.

Judge Keenan Johnson heard a charge of assault causing harm had been upgraded to one of causing serious harm.

The charge arose from an assault on May 3, 2024 at Austin Friars Street, Mullingar.

Shane Geraghty, BL, for Ms Nevin, said she was a mother of two children, including a five-month-old she was currently breastfeeding. She had no previous convictions.

He said she would engage with the probation service and was in the process of attempting to accumulate substantial compensation for her victim.

He also said that herself, her partner and children intended moving outside of Co Westmeath and to that end she had engaged with the Irish National Traveller Movement.

Mr Geraghty implored the court not to remand Ms Nevin in custody following her plea of guilty and said she was awaiting a psychological report in the context of an historic and brutal assault on her by a Russian coach when she was representing Ireland.

Judge Johnson renewed bail and adjourned sentence, saying the accused had been abiding by the existing bail conditions, was attempting to get a loan to pay compensation to her victim, and needed to have her psychiatric issues addressed.

Ms Nevin had also handed in her passport and is subject to a curfew between 8pm and 8am.

He remanded her on bail for sentencing to May 19 next and extended legal aid to cover the preparation of a psychological report.

The judge also ordered the accused to reside at her address on Austin Friars Street and refrain from all activity on social media.
