Offaly GAA clubs banned from selecting joint captains

Fine will be imposed for breaches

Offaly GAA clubs banned from selecting joint captains

Tullamore's Michael Brazil and Declan Hogan lifting the Dowling Cup in 2023. Two people will no longer be allowed to accept a cup.

OFFALY GAA clubs will be no longer allowed to have joint captains after a new regulation was approved at a meeting of the County Board on Tuesday night.

Several clubs have had joint captains in recent years but that can no longer happen. In addition, only one man will be allowed to receive silverware after a championship or league final win – senior football champions Tullamore are among the clubs who have regularly had joint captains with both going forward to receive the Dowling Cup in recent years..

Assistant secretary Pat Teehan explained that they were putting forward the regulation to comply with a rule in the Official Guide. He argued that clubs were putting forward joint captains because team managements would not make a decision. He stated that it does not happen in other sports and looks bad.

Clubs must notify the County Board of their captain before the start of the championship and a fine of €200 will be imposed for any breaches at cup presentations.
