Minister Jerry Buttimer opened the new amenities in Ballycommon

A NEW trailhead and car park in Ballycommon was officially opened this week, marking a significant investment in local infrastructure to support both recreation and sport.

The facility was formally opened in the presence of Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jerry Buttimer TD, along with local representatives, Offaly County Council officials, and members of the community.

The new development will improve access to local walking and cycling routes while also providing much-needed parking for Ballycommon GAA Club. Local officials say it will help ease congestion around the grounds on busy match days and encourage greater use of nearby trails.

Offaly TD Tony McCormack welcomed the opening, describing it as an important boost for the area. He praised the work of Offaly County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and the local community in bringing the project to completion.

Local Fine Gael TD, John Clendennen said: “These new trailheads are about more than just recreation, they represent smart investment in rural communities, in sustainable tourism, and in Offaly’s future. It’s about improving quality of life, drawing visitors to our towns and villages, and protecting our natural heritage.”

The Ballycommon Trailhead and Car Park forms part of ongoing investment in active travel and local amenities across County Offaly, aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and supporting rural communities.

Walkers using the new trailhead will also be able to take advantage of local businesses, including the popular Ballycommon Bakehouse, located just across the road—a well-known spot for visitors to relax and enjoy refreshments after a walk.

Offaly County Council has stated that the facility is expected to benefit both local residents and visitors, providing safer, more convenient access to outdoor activities while supporting local sporting organisations and businesses.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Buttimer praised the work of Deputy Clendennen, the local Fine Gael team and the leading role played by Offaly County Council. “Great to be here in Ballycommon today with the Fine Gael team in Offaly. I want to thank everyone for their hard work and advocacy on behalf of this great county. In particular, thanks to Deputy John Clendennen for being a new member in Dáil Éireann and for making a huge positive impact on behalf of the people of Offaly.”

Acknowledging the strong collaboration that made the project possible, Deputy John Clendennen also paid tribute to Offaly County Council, states agencies in the project, and Councillor Liam Quinn, whose leadership was central to delivering the Ballycommon project.
