Forty-four same sex marriages have taken place in Offaly since 2016

A total of 44 same sex marriages have taken place in Offaly since 2016. new figures show.

No figures are available for 2015, the year in which the Marriage Equality referendum was held.

Same sex marriage was introduced following a large majority in favour, with voters in only one constituency opposed.

This week is the tenth anniversary of the referendum which attracted huge interest across the globe.

Ireland was the first country in the world to introduce same sex marriage with the backing of the majority of voters in a referendum.

In Laois, 45 same sex marriages - 23 female and 22 male - have taken place since 2016 while the total is 108 in Tipperary - 56 female and 52 male.

In Westmeath the total figure is 100 - 60 female and 40 male.
