Next generation change-makers from Tullamore College were celebrated at the recent 2025 national Young Social Innovators (YSI) Awards for their outstanding YSI projects that tackle important social issues such as promoting the Irish language and culture, deforestation and textile waste.
Three teams from Offaly, who have taken part in the YSI programme in their secondary school, were among 42 teams from across Ireland shortlisted for the 2025 Awards.
One Offaly team received an award at a special ceremony on May 13 in the Aviva Stadium, which was attended by special guest, Minister Jerry Buttimer, and emceed by John Sharpson, presenter of RTÉ’s Home School Hub.
The awarded Offaly team was from Tullamore College, who won the overall Young Social Innovators of the Year Gold Award for creating ‘Grass Sheets’, a sustainable paper alternative made from repurposed grass clippings, a project aimed at reducing deforestation, carbon emissions and waste.
The two shortlisted Offaly teams were from Tullamore College for their ‘Cultúr Le Chéile’ project which aims to promote the Irish language by combining education, cultural celebration and community spirit to make learning Irish exciting.
