Five players to watch ahead of this season’s Women’s Super League

The Women’s Super League returns on Friday night when defending champions Chelsea host Manchester City.

Here the PA news agency looks at five players to watch during this season’s action.

Michelle Agyemang

Fresh from her glittering performance for England at Euro 2025, Michelle Agyemang will be looking to continue a whirlwind couple of months.

The 19-year-old became a household name at this summer’s Euros, where she scored equalisers against Sweden and Italy in the knockout stages of the competition and was named Young Player of the Tournament.

Agyemang’s performances in Switzerland followed an impressive loan spell with Brighton last season as she scored five goals in 22 appearances and won their Young Player of the Year award.

Now a women’s Kopa Trophy nominee at this year’s Ballon d’Or awards, the Arsenal striker has returned to the Seagulls for another loan spell this season.

Ellie Carpenter

Chelsea have added Champions League-winning talent to their team with Ellie Carpenter joining on a four-year deal.

Last season’s treble winners are still on the hunt for that elusive European title and Carpenter’s arrival sees her reunited with former Lyon boss Sonia Bompastor as the Blues aim to build on a record-breaking season.

The Australian right-back began her career in her homeland before joining NWSL side Portland Thorns and arrived at Lyon in 2020.

In a success-laden spell in France, Carpenter won four league titles and two Champions League trophies.

Olivia Smith

Smith made headlines over the summer after becoming the first £1million player in the women’s game.

The 20-year-old forward joined Arsenal from Liverpool in a move which eclipsed Naomi Girma’s £900,000 transfer to Chelsea from San Diego Wave in January.

Smith made an impact in her debut WSL season on Merseyside as she bagged seven goals for the club, resulting in winning the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Now in north London, the Canada international will be aiming to secure a regular spot in the Gunners’ attack.

Ellie Roebuck

England goalkeeper Roebuck will be searching for regular game time following her switch to Aston Villa.

Roebuck has signed a two-year deal with the midlands club after leaving Barcelona, where she only made two appearances in one season.

Prior to her Barca switch, the goalkeeper played for Manchester City but struggled for regular minutes in the 2023-24 season.

Still only 25 years old, Roebuck will get more matches under her belt with Villa this season in her bid to earn a return to the England squad.

Teyah Goldie

Defender Goldie is looking to make her mark in the WSL with London City Lionesses.

The 21-year-old came through Arsenal’s ranks and after sustaining two major knee injuries, she spent last season on loan with the Lionesses.

During the 2024-25 season, Goldie helped the team achieve promotion from the Championship into the top-flight and won the club’s Young Player of the Season award.

Following the expiration of her Arsenal contract, Goldie became one of several signings made by Jocelyn Precheur’s outfit, who have also added WSL experience to their ranks with Nikita Parris, Danielle van de Donk and Katie Zelem among those joining.
