Wycombe shouldn’t have needed penalties to beat Bromley – Mike Dodds

Mike Dodds was annoyed Wycombe did not finish the tie in 90 minutes after needing penalties to beat League Two side Bromley in the Carabao Cup second round.

Wycombe let an early lead slip as the tie ended 1-1 and then were one kick from elimination in the shootout.

But Byron Webster missed the target from Bromley’s fifth spot-kick and then in sudden death Will Hondermarck hit the crossbar as Wycombe prevailed 5-4.

Chairboys manager Mike Dodds said: “It’s disappointing because it shouldn’t have gone to penalties.

“At half-time I had to double down on what we are. When we trusted what we are we were very good. Second half we showed more urgency and control and should have scored at least two more goals.

“We got the structure right in the end. It justifies what we are doing.

“If we want to be successful and get out of League Two we must be better with the ball. It’s only a matter of time before everything gels and we take off.”

Magnus Westergaard headed home Taylor Allen’s cross to give Wycombe a fifth-minute lead but Bromley were level 30 minutes later through Jude Arthurs.

Bromley manager Andy Woodman said: “I’m gutted because we had a penalty to win it and didn’t take it and of course we missed out on the chance to progress.

“I thought Wycombe were a very good team, they played some great stuff and had quality patterns and movements. Sam Long had to make some big saves which kept us in the game.”
