Lee Grant ‘proud as punch’ as Huddersfield’s young guns help to sink Leicester

Huddersfield boss Lee Grant was ‘proud as punch’ after academy starlets Dan Vost and Cameron Ashia after both scored to help his side knock Championship Leicester out of the Carabao Cup.

Hamza Choudhury and Harry Winks’ strikes for the Foxes were cancelled out in a contest which finished 2-2 after 90 minutes, before Terriers goalkeeper Lee Nicholls was the hero in a shoot-out which the League One side won 3-2.

Grant, whose team will travel to Premier League Sunderland later this month in the second round, said: “It’s wonderful for me to have young players with bright eyes who are ready to go and get after it. I’m proud as punch.

“We’re asking the players to trust what’s put in front of them and to trust and believe in themselves.

“What they have as principles will give them an opportunity to beat a really good team, even against a really good team.”

Leicester boss Marti Cifuentes said: “The feeling is disappointment because we came here to try to go through and didn’t manage it.

“I’m not happy with the performance. Huddersfield did a really good job and congratulations to them, they really showed a lot of energy and desire.

“When you play a team in the division below you, they have a mental edge because they have nothing to lose.

“We started the game poorly and needed to be more aggressive in attack. To go ahead twice and then concede, we should have done better with that. After taking the lead you need to be more dominant than ever.”
