A Tullamore man who appeared before Tullamore District Court last week was disqualified from driving and fined after he was detected travelling at 186kph in heavy motorway traffic.

Paul Rogers appeared before Judge Andrew Cody on Wednesday last charged with dangerous driving.

Sgt. Richie Thoornton, court presenter, said that on October 1 of this year Garda Miley was operating a speed checkpoint on the westbound lanes of the M6 motorway when he recorded a vehicle travelling at 186kph in a 120kph zone.

Garda Miley observed the vehicle, which was travelling in the overtaking lane of the motorway at the time in heavy traffic, "brake excessively" and cut across the left lane before exiting the motorway on Junction 4.

"It was an excessive speed, Judge, and was all done in one continuous movement," Sgt Thornton said. The defendant has two previous convictions, one of which is for speeding.

The vehicle was stopped by Garda Miley and the defendant was arrested and taken to Tullamore Garda Station.

Solicitor for the defendant, Brian Duffy, said his client was attending to a medical issue related to a member of his family on the day of the offence and "fully accepts responsibility and fully realises he was a danger to himself and other road users".
