"Swanning around!"

Our top picture – taken by talented amateur photographer and regular Tribune contributor, Marty Guinan - shows a pair of swans feeding on the Shannon callows in Shannon Harbour.

This species of swan is called a Mute Swan and is the most familiar of Ireland's three swan species. The Mute Swan is resident all year round in Ireland whereas the other two the Whooper Swan and the Bewick Swan are only winter visitors to Ireland's wetlands.

Marty's second photograph is appropriately entitled "The Waiting Game!"

A motionless grey heron on the bank of the Grand Canal Greenway at Shannon Harbour waiting patiently to catch breakfast.

The heron is widely regarded as one of nature's most accomplished birds at catching fish.
