Presidential hopeful Jim Gavin received a warm welcome from local Fianna Fáil members and supporters at a packed event held in the Tullamore Court Hotel on Wednesday evening last.
The event marked a significant moment in the campaign, as it is the first time in 27 years that Fianna Fáil will contest the Presidency, generating renewed energy and enthusiasm among the party faithful.
The room was filled with local members and representatives from across the county. Ronan Feighery, Chair of the Offaly Comhairle Dáil Ceantair (CDC), formally welcomed Mr Gavin to the event, along with Deputy Tony McCormack, while Deputy Michael Cahill of Kerry was also in attendance to show his support.
In his remarks, Jim Gavin reaffirmed his deep commitment to public service, which began when he was just 18 years old. He pledged to dedicate himself to protecting the Irish Constitution, stressing the importance of having a president who acts as a steadfast guardian of the values it enshrines. Gavin paid compliment to the hospitality he received in Offaly during the national ploughing championship.

“We need a President who will not just occupy the office, but who will actively protect the Constitution and uphold its spirit for all citizens,” Gavin told the crowd.
Touching on the future of the island, Gavin said he believes in a united Ireland, but emphasised that it is a shared island and that meaningful progress requires empathy, energy, and bridge-building. “This work takes time, commitment, and a president who is prepared to lead with both vision and humility,” he said.
Gavin also highlighted the importance of shining a spotlight on those who are less fortunate, as well as recognising the unsung heroes who serve their communities every day. “As president, I will not only raise awareness of those in need but also celebrate the quiet acts of service that strengthen the fabric of our society.”
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, he noted the need for a president who can inspire at home and represent Ireland with pride abroad. “The presidency should be a unifying force. It must celebrate our shared achievements and bring people together.”
The evening concluded with a strong show of support from the Fianna Fail members and Local representatives, many of whom personally wished Jim Gavin their best wishes and support as he continues with his campaign over the coming weeks.
