Plans have been unveiled for a new 100MW battery energy storage station in Clondallow, Birr. The development plans were revealed as part of an planning permission application sought by Birr Renewable Ltd to Offaly County Council on August 15.

Birr Renewable Ltd is a private limited company incorporated on May 16, 2023 who cite their nature of business as the development of building projects.  

Their latest project could be a further contributing factor to Offaly becoming one of the main hubs in Ireland in the realm of energy creation and storage.

The proposed development also revealed the potential new station will include 53 battery containers and associated equipment, a control room container, site entrance and all the associated works. 

The current land owner for the site of the proposed development is listed as the Oxmantown Settlement Trust who are responsible for caring for the Birr Castle Estate. 

It will mark the third time when planning has been sought for an energy station in Clondallow over the previous 18 months with one application withdrawn on the March 1 last year and another incomplete application on July 4 this year. 

The planning notice was submitted on August 15 with a decision on its viability due on October 9. Any submissions concerning the application will have to be filed by September 18 to give sufficient time for review before a decision is made.
