A man who was staggering out onto the road with blood streaming from his nose was abusive to gardai, Tullamore District Court heard.

When the Gardai arrived on the scene, Declan O'Shaughnessey (42) of Riverview, Millroad, Slane, Meath said ''now you come'' and he called them them c***s and rapists. He was highly intoxicated at Bridge Street, Tullamore on May 5 last.

His solicitor Aisling Maloney said on the night in question he had been soclaising and had taken too much to drink.

She said he had been assaulted earlier and lost a tooth. He had limited memory of the night. Her client had never been in court before. He was an engineer with a young child. He had brought €300 with him to court and was deeply ashamed.

Judge Andrew Cody told him to return to the court with €1,000.

Mr O'Shaughnessey returned later with the €1,000 which was donated to the Garda Benevolent Fund and the case was struck out.
