THE redevelopment project of Ferbane Convent is soon to enter the Part 8 planning process, a meeting of Offaly County Council was told.

The Part 8 process will allow for public participation and views and observations about the project.

The proposed redevelopment of the former Convent complex will transform it into a multipurpose community, enterprise and learning hub.

“The project will enter the Part 8 planning process soon,” the Councillors were told by the Executive, “allowing the public and statutory bodies to review and provide feedback on the planning designs.”

The redevelopment of St Joseph's Convent is being funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development through the Rural Regeneration Development Fund, with match funding from the Council's Local Property Tax. During the recent meeting the Executive also shared with the Councillors a number of 3D models showing different viewpoints of the proposed, refurbished Convent. Judging by these designs it looks as if the redevelopment will be a positive thing for the town, making a historic building more attractive looking, and improving the streetscape appearance in that part of Ferbane.

The designs also show, attached to the convent, an urban garden, a multifunctional sports ground and a riverbank walk along the River Brosna. St Hilda's Services and the Laois Offaly Education Training Board (LOETB) are expected to become anchor tenants of the facility.
