A GARDA had to drive at 210kph on the Dublin-Galway motorway after a speed check recorded a motorist travelling at 184kph, Tullamore District Court was told.

When the accused driver, Mohammed Emin Shirin (29), Stillorgan Grove, Stillorgan, Dublin, appeared in court without legal representation, Judge Andrew Cody told him it was a very serious matter and he should get a solicitor.

Mr Shirin said he had no solicitor. “This is my first time in court so I'm somewhat ignorant to the formal proceedings,” he told Judge Cody.

The judge said the charges were serious and should be taken seriously and would normally warrant engaging with the legal profession before coming to court.

Mr Shirin was summonsed on two counts of alleged dangerous driving on August 11 last year on the M6.

The first summons alleges dangerous driving of a 161 Dublin registered vehicle at Moyally, Moate, Co Westmeath and a second alleges he drove dangerously at Kilbeggan South, Co Westmeath.

Mr Shirin said he would get a solicitor and added: “I'm an implant surgeon, I was responding to a medical emergency.”

Asked by the judge about the nature of the alleged driving, Sergeant Brendan Kearns said a speed check recorded a vehicle at 184kph and then a garda had to travel at 201kph.

Sergeant Kearns handed the statement of evidence to the accused man and Judge Cody adjourned the prosecution for two weeks to April 16 next.
