Top six finish for Shane Lowry at PGA Championship after up an down final round

Shane Lowry finished in a tie for sixth at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club after an up and down final round.

The Offaly golfer went into Sunday off the back of a stunning and Major record equally 62 on Saturday that left him in a tie for fourth and in prime position to challenge for a second Major title.

His final round started well and he was right in contention with two birdies in his opening six holes.

However an over-hit second shot to the reachable par 5 seventh stopped his momentum and while he escaped with a par, he dropped a shot on eight and followed that five pars.

A birdie followed on 14 but any lingering hopes he had of mounting a late challenge ended with a dropped shot on 16 and he finished the tournament on 14 under par.

The fact that he was challenging on the final day was remarkable given he was two over after two holes on his opening round.

The Championship was won by Xander Schauffele who finished on 21 under par with a birdie on the last seeing him finish one shot ahead of Bryson DeChambeau with Victor Hovland in third.

The sixth place finish for Shane see him move into the Top 10 in the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup standings and he also moves up to 33rd in the Offical World Golf Rankings.
