Jonathan Ross slammed after claiming Cillian Murphy is British at the Oscars

Host of the Oscars 2024, Jonathan Ross has received major backlash after slipping up and calling Cillian Murphy British.

The Oscars took place on Sunday, March 10 and Cillian Murphy took home the award for Best Actor for his role in Oppenheimer.

This win marked Murphy being the first Irish born person to win Best Actor at the Oscars.

Ross hosted ITV’s coverage of the Oscars last night for the first time and referred to Cillian Murphy while speaking about British stars nominated a number of times.

Viewers took to social media about the incident and were not happy.

One user took to X to say: "Sorry but did Jonathan Ross just talk about British people winning all the awards and then include Cillian Murphy???"

Another user said: "Jonathan Ross: Next up we have Best Actor and Best Actress, both of which could go to British Please tell me he isn't referring to Cillian??"

Another user said: “Who has ever thought Cillian Murphy was British?? LMAO, Jonathan Ross is off his rocker.”

The star hit back in his acceptance speech with a few words as gaeilge "go raibh míle maith agut," as well as saying "I am a proud Irishman."
