Self portrait by Eugenia Balcells which will be part of an exhibit in Damer House
SINCE its inception in 2013, the annual exhibition, ‘Homeland’ has showcased in Ireland at Damer House Gallery, in Roscrea.
Established by artists Therry Rudin and Patricia Hurl, ‘Homeland’ is devoted exclusively to video art and film. The current exhibition ‘Homeland 10 Years’ is a celebration of ten years of the exhibition.
Damer House Gallery has been instrumental in providing a dedicated venue to exhibit artists working in this field. Barbara Freeman (with Carole Neilson), Eugènia Balcells, Bernie Masterson, Robert Monaghan and Laura Skehan are the selected artists and were selected because they have shown previously in ‘Homeland’.
Their themes are all different but have a common thread of the passage of time, and our place in a changing landscape and an uncertain world.
The gallery is also very proud to show a piece (not shown in Ireland before) by John Gerrard.
The Tipperary artist is internationally renowned and widely regarded as a key figure in the development of simulation within contemporary art. Gerrard’s piece ‘Smoke Hands (Dark) 2022’ is a spatial WebGL sketch showing the artists hand cupped around dark smoke. It evokes a symbol of destruction with a gesture of offering and calls to mind our perilous dependence on carbon-based energy. This work is shown in St John’s tower, adjacent to the gallery.
The exhibition was opened by Gráinne Humphreys, Director of the Dublin Film Festival and Melanie Scott, Arts Officer Tipperary Arts Office who both commended the gallery on providing a dedicated space for video and film artists and Therry Rudin and Patricia Hurl on the achievement of 10 years of Homeland.
The exhibition is open Wednesday to Sunday each week, from 11am to 5pm and runs until Saturday October 28th. The exhibition will be screened in Barcelona in the LOOP Festival from November 16th to December 10th.
