MORE people now qualify for a GP Visit Card says Fine Gael TD for Offaly, John Clendennen.

Deputy Clendenne is urging all families in the county to check if they qualify

''Over the past two years there has been an estimated 40% increase in the number of GP Visit Cards issued across the region,'' Deputy Clendennen said. ''Nationwide, more than three-quarters of a million people can now visit their GP free of charge, removing a financial barrier to care. This initiative demonstrates Fine Gael’s commitment to easing healthcare costs in Offaly,'' he says.

The GP Visit Card scheme is open to a wide range of applicants. For most, eligibility depends on income thresholds and family circumstances. Children under eight and those aged 70 or over are automatically entitled to a card. ''Many people may not realise they qualify,'' Deputy Clendennen added. '' I urge all Offaly residents to review the criteria, as the card can save a family of four up to €600 annually.''

Applications take into account income, personal circumstances such as marital or living situation and dependants, certain expenses and whether income after expenses is below the financial threshold for family size.

Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said: ''Good health begins with good access. For those eligible, the GP Visit Card removes the cost barrier and supports proactive healthcare.'' She highlighted that cards for people aged 8–69 are means tested and urged students and parents of third-level students to apply, as eligibility is based on individual income.

Applications can be completed online at GPVisitCard.ie.
