Man pleads guilty to stealing wallet with over €1,000 in cash

A man pleaded guilty to stealing a wallet at a Tullamore Service Station when he appeared at this week's Tullamore district court.

Michael Hayes, (59) of Arden View, Tullamore took the wallet containing €1,400 at Dolan's Filling Station, Clara Road, Tullamore, on May 2 last. Along with the money the wallet contained the injured party's driving licence, safe card, VHI card and an AIB debit card.

Mr Hayes had one previous conviction for a public order offence.

Solicitor Aisling Maloney said her client was walking through the shopping centre and saw the wallet. She said it was opportunistic. Her client was not working and was on social welfare. He had brought a sum of money with him to court. She said Mr Hayes's brother was in court to support him.

Judge Andrew Cody said given that Mr Hayes had paid compensation he would apply the probation of offenders act.
