Funding has been provided for works at Durrow
Offaly is set to receive over €1.9 million in funding for the maintenance and repair of national roads in 2025.
This allocation, confirmed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), is part of the Government's commitment to enhancing road safety and infrastructure across the county.
The funding will support a range of initiatives aimed at protecting and renewing Offaly's national road network.
These initiatives include road safety improvements, pavement renewal, bridge and structure maintenance, and measures to bolster the network's resilience against severe weather events.
Local Fine Gael Deputy John Clendennen highlighted the significance of this investment, stating, "The funding for extensive road improvement works at Derrinlough and Doon, as well as minor works at Durrow junction, is very much welcome. However, I am committed to securing further funding to upgrade roads built on peat foundations and to advance strategic projects such as the N52 link road from Tullamore to Kilbeggan, enhancing accessibility across the Midlands".
This allocation aligns with the National Development Plan 2021-2030 (NDP), which prioritizes balanced investment in transport and other governmental priorities over the plan's duration. A review of the NDP is forthcoming, and Deputy Clendennen emphasized his dedication to ensuring that Offaly's strategic routes, including the N52 and N62, receive the necessary investment in the revised plan.
Minister of State with responsibility for Rural Transport, Jerry Buttimer, underscored the importance of a safe and efficient national road network in connecting all parts of Ireland. He noted that such infrastructure supports rural residents by facilitating access to work, education, and healthcare, and also accommodates the numerous bus services serving rural Ireland. Minister Buttimer stated, "The funding announced today will serve to safeguard and improve this vital national asset for all our citizens".
In addition to the €1.9 million for national roads, Offaly has been allocated €17.2 million for regional and local roads in 2025. This funding will support restoration improvements, safety measures, bridge rehabilitation, and climate change adaptations. Notable allocations include €1.8 million for the Birr Distributor Road and €200,500 for phase two of the Edenderry Inner Relief Road.
Furthermore, Offaly projects are set to benefit from €855,000 in greenway funding as part of a €67 million national investment in greenways and active travel infrastructure. This funding will support the development of walking and cycling facilities, promoting sustainable and healthier transportation options within the county.
