A brand new road linking the Tanyard with High Street in Tullamore is set to open to traffic this week, marking a significant step forward in easing congestion in the town.

The much anticipated route, which runs through Roselawn, will provide a two-way traffic flow, aimed at helping to streamline movement in the area.

Originally scheduled to open on March 3, the project faced a delay due to an issue with tarmac. However, with final surfacing and road markings expected to be completed by Friday, the road is now on track to open -weather permitting.

At a recent Tullamore Municipal District meeting, Senior Executive Engineer Joe Dooley confirmed that once the new road is operational, Tanyard Lane up to O'Connor Square will close for approximately eight weeks to facilitate the final phase of works. Despite this, access to Robbins and Oisin O'Sullivan's businesses will remain open, with clear signage ensuring smooth navigation for both motorists and pedestrians.

Designed to enhance traffic flow the 6.5 metre-wide link road will feature a pedestrian crossing at the top of Roselawn. A key objective of the project is to alleviate congestion at the ''pinch-point'' near Tullamore library, a longstanding issue with drivers.

Once fully open traffic will be able to enter O'Connor Square via the new link road. Exiting the square motorists can choose to turn right onto Bridge Street or head left up High Street.

Councillor Declan Harvey said the road will be a great asset to the town.''It should have been done years ago in conjunction with the work on O'Connor Square. It will take people a while to get used to the system but it will work.'' he said.

With the finishing touches underway, the new link-road could provide a smoother, more accessible route for residents and visitors alike.

Also due to finish this year is a pedestrian route linking O'Connor Square with Church Street.

The project over the Tullamore river, will provide open space and will act as a pivotal connection between the two key squares. A remote working hub forms part of this plan and will be located in the old Scanlon's House on Church Street.
