Freezing conditions overnight set to leave roads in Offaly in treacherous state

SNOW has been falling steadily throughout the day in Tullamore and surrounding areas.

With temperatures just above freezing point, the snow is beginning to accumulate on roads throughout the district.

The snow is accompanied by freezing fog and road conditions are worsening as the afternoon extends into evening.

With freezing temperatures expected tonight roads are likely to be in a treacherous state around Tullamore and other areas of Offaly later and tomorrow.

Despite the wintry conditions many people have taken to the streets and the Grand Canal around Tullamore to enjoy the seasonal snow.

Some completed their regular walk along the Grand Canal from the town centre to Boland's lockhouse or even further to Digby Bridge in Cappincur.

School children bracing the elements were hoping to have a slightly extended Christmas holiday if schools remain closed tomorrow due to the weather.

The freezing conditions are predicted to continue in Offaly and other parts of Leinster and Munster until next Thursday.
