Traffic lights to remain in place at busy road in Offaly

TARFFC LIGHTS

Traffic lights are to remain in place on the Clonminch road in Tullamore

TRAFFIC lights will remain in place on the Clonminch Road in Tullamore to facilitate works to link utilities to modular homes being provided for Ukrainian refugees in the area.

Concerns were expressed by a Tribune reader on Sunday that the lights had been there since August 13 last even though works had stopped.

“After a few weeks (from August 13) work ceased on the road side but the lights remain and the road section is closed,” said the reader, from the Killeigh area, in an email to the Tribune.

The email continued: “The lights cause delays to traffic using the Clonminch Road on a 24 hour basis with no ongoing roadworks.  Why not remove the traffic lights and fencing from the road until the OPW can connect the site to utilities, like power and water.”

This week local councillor Declan Harvey said the lights would remain operational as works were recommencing.

He said if the lights were removed the health and safety application process to have them re-erected would have to be entered into again.

And he revealed that Offaly County Council is also set to commence work on a new pedestrian crossing in the area.

Cllr Harvey stressed the lights would remain in place until all works have been completed.
