Offaly will host its first 'Kayathlon' this summer

The ultimate adventure race coming to Offaly

The ultimate adventure race coming to Offaly

Later this year on August 12, Offaly will host its first multi-sport adventure race. Set in the picturesque village of Kinnitty at the foothills of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the splendid grounds of the renowned Kinnitty Castle will provide the backdrop to the start and finish of the inaugural 'Off The Bloom Adventure Race.'

Over the course of the race, competitors will take in the breathtaking views of the Irish midlands while hiking/running, kayaking and biking their way through the natural peat-lands bogs and mountain ranges of the Slieve Blooms.

"We have no doubt the Adventure Race will be a great success and more importantly will enhance and promote Kinnitty as an adventure tourist destination in mid Ireland," organisers said.

There are two categories - the 35km Sports race and the Elite 65km race. Both categories include sprints, cycles and mountain runs, but only the Elite event includes a kayaking leg which runs for one kilometre. Add that to a 300 metre run, a 48 km cycle, a 10 km Mountain Run/Hike, and a finale of a 6.5 km cycle and 300 metre run, and the Elite race shapes up to be one of the toughest tests available to most athletes.

The Off the Bloom Adventure Race registration is now open, and you can find out more on the website or the event's facebook page:
