Delicious weather on Saturday and patchy weather on Sunday were the backdrop to an excwiting weekend of Winter League (sponsored by JD Scanlon & Co - Dermot Scanlon) play-offs. Eighty players teed-off on Saturday morning and after two days of competition only four teams remain. Many thanks to all who took part and turned up on time as it made for a very smooth running of the competition.

Whilst each match had its own fair share of drama, two items are worthy of note. Firstly young Conor Flanagan served up an incredible shot on the Par 3 12th hole leaving the ball three inches from the hole. Conor’s maturity in the way he hid his disappointment with his team’s overall result augurs well for this young man’s future in the sport.

Secondly it took an adrenaline fuelled four additional play-off holes before a winner could be declared in the match between Brendan Dooley and John Casey. Overall the new format was very favourably commented upon and served up a feast of golf.

The semi-final matches will take place next Saturday starting at 11.10am - please see online booking and/or club noticeboards for teetimes. The Winter League Final is down for decision on Sunday, February 27 at 1pm. Best of luck to all.

RESULTS: 1st Overall Stephen Egan Snr 42pts, Cat 1 Derek Hannon 39pts, Cat 2 Ken Fitzpatrick 42pts, Cat 3 Michael O’Meara 42pts, Cat 4 Dave Berry 40pts, Junior Damien Mooney 39pts.

Due to the very unsettled weather the final round of Martin’s Golf Winter League proved to be a blustery and hard day to get a good score in, some requiring a good score and others safely over the cut off line. It has been decided that the top 40 players will qualify with the best 3 cards to count. The Leader with only one round to play was Dave Berry by 5 points over a determined Adrian Stewart and Colin ‘The Goose’ Carey. Others were somewhat in contention but were more concerned with the bragging rights of winning the all important bet Liam Scally and Anthony Lynch to name a few.

Dave Berry after a scotching on the papers last week about arriving in a colorful Blouse and tee issues was out to prove a point and to squeeze another score in. Hard as the trailing players tried they could not handle the dangling Berry in the wind he brought in another brilliant score. The strong winds blowing lots of potential golfers chances away, even Colin ‘The Goose’ Carey had his wings snipped.

The Donegal man Adrian Stewart fought hard in the tuff conditions but even his low trajectory on every putt proved to be a uphill battle. Well done to Dave Berry on winning the Martins Golf Winter League leading qualifier competition. Dave is a longtime member of Castle Barna and popular winner but also a great supporter of the club in all weathers. Well done Dave.

Sunday, February 20 competition was won by Stephen ‘Zeb’ Egan shooting 1 over par for 42pts. Stephen a former Captain of Castle Barna is enjoying his first year away from committe duties and seems to be getting more golf played, great shooting Stephen.

Category 1 winner and a regular on the podium is Derek ‘Sergio’ Hannon with a score of 39pts. Derek is a quality ball striker and seemed to find the going easy in the blustery winds.

Category 2 Karate kid Ken Fitzpatrick playing very good golf won his category with 42pts another great supporter of the club and all around nice guy.

Category 3 Michael O’ Meara seems to own this position of late with yet another victory in cat 3. Keeping The O’Meara still needing a bigger trailer to collect all of their winning prizes. 42pts.

Category 4 Its that Man again Dave Berry having a great start to this year keep it going Dave. 40pts.

Junior. A tasty little golfer and one to watch for the future Damien Mooney, his score was 39pts.

Clash of the Titans: Not forgetting the all important bet that was putt on at the start of the Winter league by a former captain Liam Scally (Westmeath) and Vice Captain Anthony Lynch (Kildare). They played together at 11am on Sunday so both could keep an eagle eye on each other. Yes the chat in the clubhouse was that it was a game of two half’s with Scally up by one point at half time, a slender lead, but a lead just the same. Then Lillywhite Lynch took the bull by the horns and decided to put a notch in the carpenter Scallys armour on the 13th hole that left a mark near his pocket . Liam fought Gallantly but failed to recover from the lilly whites experience of playing in the wind . Liam was linked back to the Jeep some what injured , but is said to be recovering well by Mavis side.

Bring a Friend Fund Day: Castle Barna had the privilege of being the host of a very popular event in their calender year. Bring a friend Fun Day has become a great social event if you want to introduce someone you know to golf or your golf club and the atmosphere of Castle Barna. The weather on Saturday was beautiful and there was a lovely warmth on your back from the sun shining while you walked up the fairways. Over 100 people arrived on the day with the golf course buzzing. Great banter was had and the odd chuckle of laughter coming from different areas of the course. There were two 9 hole scramble competitions front and back nines. Anyone starting their nine holes received a free tip or quick lesson from pros David Cully and Joe Frawley.

After all the golf was played all resided to the clubhouse for some finger food and light refreshments, some refreshments lighter than others.

The victors on the day for the front nine were Shane Daly, Dan Cunningham and because Dan had no friends to invite he flew in his relation Rick Hearsey all the way from Canada to play with him. Well done Shane and Rick.

The back nine winners were the Sterling couple of Vincent and Angela Murphy who also flew in Gary O’Riordan all the way from Germany to help them clinch victory.

Lucky dip winners were: Andy Dowdall, Paddy Casey and Camillus McCauley.

Well done to all concerned in the success of a this great day.

Last Thursday the Open had a very big entry with golfers from various clubs taking part. The winner on the day was John Mcormack showing very good form at the moment returning 45 pts. Hot on his heels was Ollie McGlynn returning 43pts.

Spring Lamb No 7 was won by David Gavigan with 22pts. David was last seen driving out of the club car park with the Lamb standing up on the back seat of his car.

Spring Lamb No 8 was won by Colin Carey with 23pts. Colin was seen cleaning the back seat of the car due to the lamb being so nervous there was a possibility of an accident.
