Offaly Rowing Club continued their impressive start to the Regatta season with a large squad attending the Athlone Regatta, held in Coosan last Saturday.

With a number of strong performances on the day throughout the various age groups and disciplines, it was one of their younger members who claimed their solitary win on the day.

Despite the horrendous conditions, Finn Lowry powered to an early morning victory in the J13 singles fending off rowers from Athlone, Enniskillen and Carrick to take the top prize. Torrential rain didn’t faze the young Cloonagh West rower who showed great composure and concentration to stick to the task at hand.

Lowry was in action again in the afternoon along with Caden Coleman, Ben O’Grady and David Mooney in the J14 Quad race. Coxed by Martha O’Grady, the Offaly crew finished in second place behind an impressive Methodist Belfast outfit.

Daniel Lambe had a strong performance in the J15 singles finishing second while Caden Coleman also lost out narrowly to finish second in the J14 singles.

The afternoon started with a fine second place finish for Blaithin Clarke in the Women’s J18 singles along with the wide range of singles, doubles and quads across all age groups acquitting themselves well.

This followed on from a hugely successful trip to Limerick a few weeks previous where the hugely popular J16 Boys quad team of Oran Sampson, John Twomey, John McDonald and Cian Craven stormed to victory.

There was also success for Caden Coleman who continued his strong start to the year by taking the J14 singles crown.

To top things off, the hard working Nicole Duke also landed individual honours at the Castelconnell event in Limerick after she proved fastest in the Women’s J18 singles race.

It is coming into the busy stage of the season now with the Cork Regatta on this weekend before a two day event in Lough Rynn, Leitrim the following weekend.
