Tributes have been paid to a motorcyclist who died from his injuries three weeks after a collision that also claimed the life of Garda Kevin Flatley.
Izzet Can Berber, a father-of-three from Balgriffin, Co Dublin passed away peacefully at Beaumont Hospital on Saturday evening, June 1, with his wife by his side.
He had been in critical condition since the crash on May 11 at a Garda speed checkpoint on the R132 at Lissenhall, near Swords.
During the incident, Mr Berber's motorcycle struck Garda Flatley who was performing a routine traffic operation.
Garda Flatley was fatally injured in the collision and became the 90th member of An Garda Síochána to die in the line of duty.
In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said: "The motorcyclist (a man aged in his 30s) involved in a fatal road traffic collision on the R132 at Lissenhall near Swords, North Dublin, on Sunday, 11th May 2025, was pronounced deceased at Beaumont Hospital yesterday evening, Saturday 31st May 2025.
"Garda Family Liaison Officers are providing ongoing support and information to both families involved. Investigations are ongoing."
Mr Berber's death notice on RIP.ie describes him as the "beloved husband of Caitríona" and "very sadly missed by his loving wife, his adored children Daniel, Emily and Kuzey, sister Gunes, parents-in-law Gerry and Patricia, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and his wide circle of friends in the motorbike community".
Originally from Turkey, Mr Berber had made his home in Dublin, where he worked with the Elliott Group. His family have asked for donations to the ICU unit in Beaumont Hospital in lieu of flowers.
Condolence messages have poured in, remembering Izzet as a devoted father and husband.
"We are so sorry for the tragic loss of your husband and father, taken away far too young," one message read. "Sincere condolences. Wishing you strength and courage at this very sad time. May Izzet rest in peace."
Another wrote: "My deepest, most sincere condolences to his wife and children especially. What a beautiful tribute to all the staff in the ICU. I've never read a nicer thing to do, a little legacy that won't ever be forgotten by all the staff. May the gods watch over and take you all through these hard dark few days ahead."
A third tribute read: "Sincere condolences to Catriona & the kids, family & friends. Jan was the best neighbour- so helpful & always had time for chats- normally at crazy hours on his way home from work! Always smiling, always cheerful & I know Kuzey will be your strength through all of this. He will be forever missed."
"Our heartfelt sympathy to you, the children, and all of Izzet's family and friends," added another. "You radiated positivity and gave us tremendous support and incredible encouragement in the midst of your own trauma. May those you love, and who love you, wrap themselves around yourself and the children. Donations to the ICU unit in Beaumont is not just generous, but a beautiful tribute."
Funeral arrangements for Mr Berber are to be announced at a later date.
