'In the name of Jesus Christ' - Gardaí stunned by what man was doing in back of van

Gardaí in Louth were left stunned recently after a discovery they made in the back of a van stopped at a cross-border checkpoint. 

The incident was featured on RTE's On The Beat programme which follows Garda units on the job all over the country, including Dundalk and the Louth area.

Viewers were shocked by the latest episode which aired on RTE One on Monday night and highlighted a potentially lethal situation at a checkpoint in Louth.

Garda Kenneth Bogan described the scene on the show: "We discovered a third passenger sitting in the rear in a deck chair." The man was sitting behind a two-year-old child who was also being transported in the van.

A Garda at the scene told the driver: "That's madness. That's a death trap."

The man told gardaí he was "holding on tight" but officers were quick to take action and told the passenger "you can go no further" in that.

Garda Bogan gave the driver a dose of reality as he said in a crash the man would come through the seat holding his son, adding, "and "I'm saying this as one father to another, that young fella then goes through that windscreen."

"In the name of Jesus Christ," he exclaimed talking to the driver. "You going to get a ticket for that. That's very serious," he continued.
