BIRR nature photographer Tina Claffey was recently invited by Ireland's Ambassador to the Netherlands, Ann Derwin, to exhibit alongside the Dutch photographer Bo Scheeringa at the Noorderlicht Photography Foundation, in the city of Groningen, The Netherlands.
“I was truly honoured,” Tina told The Midland Tribune, “to have been invited by the Ambassador to take part in this wonderful exhibition.” The exhibition ran from the 30th January until the 13th February. “I was so happy,” said Tina, “to attend the opening in Groningen on the 30th of January.”
The exhibition was called "The Irish Peatlands through the Female Gaze" and it marked the Dutch celebration of St. Brigid’s Day and brought together two female photographic perspectives on the Irish living landscape which depicted nature in an optimal form as a technological, cultural and ecological system in a constantly changing landscape.
The exhibition was put together by the Embassy of Ireland in the Netherlands. Ireland's Ambassador to the Netherlands, Ann Derwin, officially opened the exhibition. “Displaying both Tina Claffey’s & Bo Scheeringa’s work highlights the talent and creativity of these two wonderful photographers and will form the centre piece of our Brigid’s day celebration here in the Netherlands this year,” said the Ambassador. “We are also celebrating the pivotal contribution that the Dutch made in the preservation of the Irish peatlands.
“Holding the event in the North of the Netherlands enhances our presence in the region, where there is a vibrant Irish community and it is an area that was rich in peatlands (theVeenkoloniën). There is a large Irish student community in Groningen that will, no doubt, be inspired by the exhibition and the links between Ireland and the Netherlands.”
The exhibition will travel to Ballycroy, Co. Mayo in October 2026.
Tina displayed 21 framed images in the exhibition, as did Bo Scheeringa. 13 of Tina's 22 images were taken in Killaun Bog near Birr, the rest were taken in a number of other bogs in the Irish midlands including Boora, Cranberry bog, Scohaboy bog and Cloncrow bog.
