Roscrea mourns former Cistercian College President and Tipperary Councillor

Mr Smyth was a former President of the Cistercian College in Roscrea

The community of Roscrea and surrounding areas are in mourning as tributes are being paid to former Tipperary councillor and teacher Dan Smyth, who died on Friday, October 3 and is due to be laid to rest on Tuesday.

The Municipal Council for the Roscrea, Thurles and Templemore local electoral area will hold a special meeting on Tuesday morning to pay tribute to the former councillor and President of Cistercian College in Roscrea.

Mr Smyth, of ‘San Giovanni’, Streamstown, Roscrea, had been a biology teacher and later president of the landmark Roscrea school and previously served as a member of North Tipperary County Council. He died at his home surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife Phyl, his children, William, Freda, Margaret, Anna, Thomas and Grace, his grandchildren Sophie, Bláithín, Danny, Liam and Pierce, his sisters Grace, Breeda and Kathleen, brothers Mick, Frank and Willie, son-in-law Karl, daughters-in-law Basia and Carína, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbours and wide circle of friends.

Mr Smyth will lie in repose in Tierney's Funeral Home, Roscrea, on Monday evening from 4pm to 7pm. A private removal from his residence will take place on Tuesday morning, October 7, at 11.30am arriving in St. Cronan's Church, Roscrea for the funeral mass at 12pm. The burial will be afterwards in Ballinree Cemetery.

Mr Smyth was predeceased by his parents Bill and Margaret, brother Jim, grandson Caoímhín and sister-in-law Margaret.
