Spend money on Wastewater Plants not Lough Derg Pipe, says Cllr

Many Wastewater Treatment Plants are 'not fit for purpose'

Ballyroan Wastewater Treatment Plant set for new upgrade

Uisce Éireann says it's going to upgrade the Nenagh Wastewater Treatment Plant .

CLLR Seamus Morris told a recent meeting that the money for the Lough Derg Pipe should instead be directed towards increasing the capacity of the Wastewater Treatment Plants in North Tipperary.
Cllr Joe Hannigan welcomed the news that the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Nenagh town is going to get an upgrade and capacity increase. “However there are a number of other towns and villages in North Tipp whose Plants badly need an upgrade. For years we have been looking for upgrades to Treatment Plants in Ballycommon, Borrisokane, Silvermines and Cloughjordan because their lack of capacity is holding back development, and yet we have received no good news about them. In Ballycommon there are 35 houses which are ready to go but they can't proceed because the wastewater system serving that village is inadequate.”
Cllr Seamus Morris pointed out that it could be a very long time before the upgrading works on the Nenagh Water Plant are completed. “These projects often take a lot longer than advertised,” he remarked.
“What is certain is that we cannot accept any more IPAS asylum seekers in Nenagh, because they will just put extra pressure on the system, pressure which we cannot cope with at the moment before our Wastewater Plant is upgraded. And to be honest, between you and me, a lot of them are bogus asylum seekers.”
Cllr Morris said they should contact the Tipperary TDs and tell them to spend money on upgrading the Wastewater Plants in Tipperary rather than billions on a Pipe from Lough Derg to Dublin.
“At the moment there is no capacity in the Plants in Cloughjordan, where a TD lives, in Portroe, in Silvermines.”
A member of the Council's Planning Department pointed out that his Department is “trying to arrange a meeting with Uisce Eireann regarding Ballycommon and hopefully something will come from that.”
