Irish Water plans to bring water from Parteen Basin (pictured, including proposed abstraction point) to Dublin.
A major meeting will be held in Limerick this evening, Thursday June 19th, to discuss the controversial Shannon Pipe proposal.
Cllr Seamus Morris told the June meeting of Nenagh Municipal District this morning that he had received a letter from Sheila Cahill, the Chairperson of the Limerick Green Party, inviting him to speak at the meeting.
A couple of months ago the nine Councillors of Nenagh Municipal District signed a letter stating their opposition to the project.
“The purpose of the meeting,” commented Ms Cahill, “is to provide information on the proposed plan and we are hoping to have input from Uisce Eireann, the ESB, the EPA and Inland Fisheries Ireland. We are also inviting short inputs from Shannon Protection Alliance, anglers and others with an interest in the river.” In other words, the meeting will bring together the proponents of the opposing sides of the debate, probably for the first time ever. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and will be held in the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel in Limerick.
During the Nenagh MD meeting Cllr Morris said he will be going along to the meeting. He described the plan to build a Pipe from Parteen Weir to Dublin as being “lunacy”. He said he believes this evening's meeting will be “where the fightback begins”, and urged the other Councillors to attend, as well as all concerned members of the public.
