A new shop, The Mill Pantry, was officially opened in Carrigahorig on Friday, an occasion which was warmly welcomed by many locals.
"Isn’t this fantastic!" said one of the locals. "With a lot of gloom around at the moment it is so nice to see this really uplifting occasion. A shop is badly needed and this will help fill the hole."
Over the years the village has had 3 pubs, 2 restaurants, a shop and a post office but like so many rural communities over the years, survival became impossible and each premises closed its doors.

"The Mill Pantry will serve speciality coffee and delicious home baking," said the proprietor Sinead Finn. "We are a small village shop serving delicious hot drinks and home baked treats to take away. We also stock a range of local, Irish artisan foods."

The Mill Pantry is located in the iconic premises of EP Flynn & Sons. Sinead is co-proprietor with her sister Kate.

The shop's name is inspired by the fact that Carrigahorig had a number of mills many years ago thanks to the river that runs through the middle of the village. This included the corn mill which when finished with corn processing had a second life generating electricity for the whole village. It's wonderful that a mill will once again be grinding in Carrigahorig, this time giving off the pleasant aroma of fresh coffee and an opportunity for a really nice place to stop.
Initial opening hours will be Friday from 7.00am to 4.00pm and Saturday from 8.00am to 4.00pm.
