Many farmers in Offaly are worried about the effect the proposed multi-billion Euro Lough Derg Pipe will have on their properties.
Speaking to the Tribune during the Uisce Éireann consultation meeting in Birr last week, the IFA Infrastructure Chair Paul O'Brien pointed out that when he has been listening to affected farmers and landowners “on the ground, it is clear they are extremely concerned about the impact this very large project will have on their properties and livelihoods.”
IFA Offaly Chairman Pat Walsh told the Tribune that many farmers along the route of the pipeline have already been in contact with the IFA to highlight their serious concerns. “Farmers are very worried about a utility coming onto their land to dig a huge trench to install a pipeline,” Pat said. “They are extremely concerned about the massive disturbance this will cause. The excavation is huge and will result in upset to badgers which will result in the spread of TB with the potential to wipe out farm enterprises.” He pointed out that if badgers with TB are found on your land it can result in your farm being quarantined for several weeks.
He said at the consultation the IFA strongly highlighted many of the concerns of farmers directly to Uisce Éireann and made it very clear that the IFA will stand up and fight for farmers and “insist that properties and their businesses are fully protected.”
