LOCAL Fine Gael Councillor, Eleanor Clendennen, has welcomed the opening of the Local Improvement Scheme for applications in the Birr Area.

The scheme will allow for the repair and improvement of small private roads and laneways leading to local homes, farms and businesses that are not under the normal maintenance of the Local Authorities. The works carried out will require a local contribution from respective householders and completion of works will be determined by demand for the scheme.

Cllr Clendennen stated: “I know this is a subject John Clendennen TD has been consistently raising for some time, and I’m delighted to see the scheme is now open for applications as it focuses on improving rural infrastructure and connectivity. This is an important scheme for rural area, and delivers significant benefits to anyone successfully engaging in the scheme’’.

The Kinnitty based Councillor also highlighted the importance of the new Government's commitment to rural Ireland. “The previous Government funded the LIS scheme, historically there has been a high demand for the scheme in Offaly, and particularly the Birr Area. I’ll will be working with John Clendennen TD to ensure funding for the county is maximised, through the Department of Rural and Community Development, with the LIS scheme projects delivered by Offaly County Council.”

The deadline for submissions is Thursday March 13th at 4pm, and I would encourage anyone interested in making a submission to start working on the application as soon as possible as there are specific details required,” concluded Cllr Clendennen.
