An architect's drawing of the proposed €12.5 million Energy Centre in Nenagh.
ONE of the Councillors, Cllr Phyll Bugler, asked for an update on the Nenagh Energy Centre during the January meeting of Nenagh Municipal District.
This major, multi-million Euro project will be a major boost for the North Tipperary region when it's up and running.
Rosemary Joyce, Senior Executive Officer in the Council, told Cllr Bugler that the Council staff working on the project “still have to finalise the acquisition of the site. We will hopefully finalise that in the near future. It is a long-term project, something of a slow burner, but it will advance significantly this year.
“Until we know the exact boundary of the site it will be impossible to do a design. Once we have reached agreement with the landowner then we will proceed with the design. It's our ambition that during the first six months of this year we will be looking to go to part 8.”
A Part 8 planning application is the method a local authority uses to apply for planning permission for major developments.
“This will be a significant investment in Nenagh. It will be a centre for research and development focussing on energy.”
Cllr John Carroll said it's a very positive project and will make Tipperary "one of the leaders in Ireland in this kind of thing.”
He said Tipperary County Council will be developing Ireland's first carbon-neutral building. The project could generate some 350 jobs over a 10-year period.
In June 2020, when the project was first announced, Brian Beck, Director of Services, pointed out that this exciting €12.5 million project had been proposed for a location on Martyr's Road in Nenagh Town.
He said the “Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Energy” was being promoted by the council in partnership with the Tipperary Energy Agency, North Tipperary Development Company, Limerick Institute of Technology, Community Power and Siga Ltd.
The contract for the appointment of the Integrated Design Team for the “Nenagh Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Energy (SECOE – Ireland)” was signed on Thursday May 30th, 2024. The Integrated Design Team is led by Henry J. Lyons Architects who say they are committed to putting sustainability at the heart of their projects and they have assembled a team of experts covering the disciplines of Civil & Structural Engineering, Quantity Surveyors, Conservation, Landscape Architects, Fire Safety, Disability Access, Sustainability/LEED, Heritage and Archaeology, Environmental & Ecology and Façade Consultant.
