THE ‘Great Ruckin Duck Race’ will take place as part of ‘Super Saturday’, a family fun day at Birr Rugby Club on Vintage Saturday, August 2nd next.
Sponsored again by Yates Steel, the duck race will see hundreds of ducks pitted against each other on the Camcor, to determine the greatest ‘ruckin duck’ around. The race is also kindly supported by Offaly County Council, who will provide access to the Riverwalk to facilitate this fun event.
Don’t miss your chance to enter. Ducks can be purchased from club members or online (https://www.birrrugby.ie/news/the-great-ruckin-duck-race-2). For those who manage to get their duck in the top three, there are a range of great prizes including €500 cash and tickets to Ireland v South Africa or Ireland v Japan – as well as smaller bonus prizes on the day!
A highlight of Vintage Saturday, ‘Super Saturday’ takes place at the rugby club from 11am to 7pm. It kicks off at 11am with children’s tag rugby for U-11s to U-13s (DOB 2013-2015). This will be followed by a Tag Rugby Tournament for adults from 12.30pm, sponsored by Kellys Bar. Teams of 10 players can enter (minimum three male/female) to compete for tag trophies and the right to put their team’s name on the Birr RFC’s perpetual tag rugby annual shield.
If you don’t have a team the rugby club encourages you to turn up and they will find you a ‘barbarians team’ on the day. Tag participants will enjoy a BBQ and have access to Birr RFC, where Neil Kennedy will entertain the crowd from 3pm-6pm
Sponsored by Killeen Bearings, there will also be free children’s games and trials from 1pm to 5.30pm and the chance to compete against some surprise visitors on the day, before the duck race kicks off at 6pm.
Denis Tierney, President of Birr RFC, said: “Birr RFC has been a long-time supporter of Birr Vintage Week and we are delighted to host our Super Saturday event again this year at our club. Following our successful inaugural event last year, this family friendly event promises to be a great day out with mixed mini tag rugby, for both kids and adults, free children’s games and trials, and our popular ruckin duck race.
“As Club President, I’ve seen our minis and youths section grow and this event is an opportunity for us to show how fun the sport can be for both boys and girls, while providing some fun and craic for all the family.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone to the club next Saturday and hope this Super Saturday will become a regular fixture in the Vintage Week programme for many years to come.”
