JOHN Clendennen TD has welcomed the announcement by Minister Darragh O’Brien of €1.23 million in Community Support Funding for two community-led projects in Offaly, as part of the EU Just Transition Fund Programme. This funding aims to support communities transitioning from peat-based industries to sustainable economic activities.
Among the beneficiaries, Offaly County Council has been awarded €1 million for the Dalton Centre project in Shannonbridge, which will see the refurbishment of a vacant industrial building to provide essential services, facilitating training and job creation in the construction and renewable energy sectors.
Additionally, the Kilcormac Development Association will receive €231,787.68 to develop a new tourist office. This facility is set to become an ecotourism hub, offering amenities such as electric vehicle charging points and bicycle repair services, thereby enhancing sustainable tourism in the region.
Commenting on the funding, Deputy Clendennen stated, “This significant investment emphasises the Government's commitment to fostering sustainable development and economic resilience in Offaly through the EU Just Transition Fund. In recent months, both Fine Gael MEP’s for the region, Nina Carbery and Maria Walsh have visited the county upon my request to hear first-hand the challenges around Just Transition. The Shannonbridge Dalton Centre and Kilcormac projects exemplify the innovative spirit of our local communities, and I am confident this investment will lead to further growth and opportunity.”
Deputy Clendennen concluded, “I have been critical of Just Transition in the past but I fully welcome just over 20% of the overall funding scheme allocated to two important initiatives in Offaly. As we navigate the shift towards a low-carbon future, it is imperative that we support and invest in our local communities. These projects not only address environmental objectives but also pave the way for economic revitalization and social cohesion in our region.”
